The ignorance and gall of Trump supporting Christians continue to show no bounds.
If I had a nickel for every blog post like this where the title sounds like it’s right out of the front page of The Onion, I’d be able to buy enough of my own book to make it a NYT best seller.
I recently shared a 10-year-old blog post wherein President Carter shares why he decided to publicly part ways with the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), one of the most conservative Christian denominations in the country. He left due to the denomination’s stance on the treatment of women and how they are deemed not suitable for ordination (base on the SBC’s interpretation of scripture).
One of the “usual suspects” of Trump Supporting Christians (or TSCs for short) that participate in my posts shared this:
My response to this gentleman was thus:
On what exegetical basis are you making that judgment of Carter? Which President since Carter would you say has demonstrated a more Christlike attitude, character, and mindset? Second, do you like to cherry pick verses, or are you prepared to back up the selection of that verse with sound hermeneutics and a complete understanding of the Pauline scriptures.
Now, I have a confession to make. I LOVE to say sh*t like this to Trump Supporting Christians for two main reasons:
- To be intellectually obnoxious because there’s nothin’ Trump Supporting Christians hate more than an elitist liberal. (And white TSCs particularly hate it when a BLACK elitist liberal gets all up in their face. You just KNOW deep inside they’re thinking “I remember when these blacks knew their place!” Side note: is saying “white Trump Supporting Christian” unnecessarily redundant? Hmmm? Anyway….)
- To make it clear that if you wanna get into a theological discussion, I’m gonna come packin’. So yooz best bring yo’ A-game.
Newsflash: not once in the 2+ years that I have engaged with TSCs like this, have any of them ever responded with any sound hermeneutical argument for their f-ed up, obviously politically conflated beliefs. (FYI, hermeneutical just means how one interprets the bible). They usually either deflect the conversation or insult me — which is the dozens equivalent of saying “Yo’ momma!” (Back in the day of playin’ the dozens, “Yo’ momma” was the classic response when a person didn’t have a good comeback to a biting piece of shade.)
The ironic idiocy of Trump supporters never fails
I haven’t even gotten to the best part yet. Set aside for now the fact that Jimmy Carter is a man who has lived his Christian values more authentically, publicly, and genuinely than any modern day politician (and many modern day pastors for that matter). This is a man who is a driving force and promoter of Habitat for Humanity, a Christian-based organization that not just helps those in need of a home by giving them a house, but instills in them pride, education, and empowerment. In 1982, he and his wife established the Carter Center to promote and expand human rights and he has traveled extensively to conduct peace negotiations, monitor elections, and advance disease prevention and eradication in developing nations. In 2002 he WON THE NOBL PEACE PRIZE for “…his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.”
Plain and simple: he is a man who walks the walk and talks the talk. He empirically embodies everything that Christ teaches a leader should have. But according to this a**hole (and the a-hole that liked his comment), on judgment day, God is going to have a problem with Jimmy Carter because he left a denomination that he feels belittles women and doesn’t hold them in the regard he believes the should be held. (But that Donald Trump!. Now that man is a saint!) 🤮
But the supremely beautiful, dare I say providential irony of Mr. TSC’s ignorant comment here, is that the verse he shared IS THE WRONG VERSE! I mean, it’s social media posts like this that keep satirists and comedians in business! He referenced 2 Timothy 3:3. But he’s quoting 2 Timothy 4:3.
Now, I know what you’re gonna say, “It’s obvious he just made a mistake.” First, no, it’s not obvious. Second, it doesn’t matter. It speaks to the MO of all these TSCs. They like to cherry-pick verses so much, they don’t even know which ones they’re actually reciting, and they don’t bother to take one frakkin’ minute to even verify the crap they share (which prompted me to give them this advice).
And then to do it in a comment where he’s judging JIMMY F-ING CARTER for not knowing God’s word?! In a comment where he’s judging a man like Jimmy Carter for not knowing God’s word, he demonstrates the HE himself doesn’t know Gods’ word. Geeze-us Mary in Heaven, these people have some nerve!
It gets even better
Now, here’s the what 2 Timothy 3:3 actually says (in full context):
1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God — 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people. (Emphasis mine, as I chose to bold what 2 Timothy 3:3 specifically says.)
In an attempt to cast judgment on one of this nation’s most respected Christian leaders, who just happens to be a man that offends this TSC’s political sensibilities, he gave the chapter and verse for a section of the bible that actually describes his boy Trump. I think that’s comically providential. (And I won’t even get into the predilection of Paul to criticize those in the church for being hypocrites).
Every day, TSCs like this remind me that 1) they don’t know the bible they claim is so important to them, and 2) the conflation of their politics and faith has so blinded them to their transgressions, THEY F*CKING ACT AS IF GOD IS GOING TO SEND JIMMY CARTER, OF ALL F-ING PEOPLE, TO HELL!
THIS is why I have dropped more f-bombs in a single month than perhaps all of 2017 and 2018 combined (I’m talking about real f-bombs, not the fake euphemistic ones from Battlestar Galactica I like to use. :)
