Hip hop and rap songs which have violent themes were not born out of a racist mindset. In fact, they are a product of the abject poverty caused by many generations of systemic racism and police brutality that songs like Jason Aldean’s celebrates.

A better comparison to Straight Outta Compton would be a country song that talked about the horrors of the impact opioids in rural America. Or a song like “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”

“Try that in a small town” is a song that specifically threatens violence against first amendment rights—rights that BIPOC and BIPOC allies have used to fight against oppression. All done against the backdrop of a courthouse with a notorious racist history, and lyrics that specially praise sundown town behavior. (For crying out loud, the song even ends with a sunset. 🤦🏾‍♂️)

The fact that it does not specifically mention a race is precisely why it makes the perfect racist anthem.
